Our meeting this week was organized by Peter Lawrence, Peter had 4 turners (including himself) working the lathes mainly making items they had practiced at home, so some of the items were started at home to be finished at the club.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 31st August 2023, it’s being organized by Peter Lawrence and Peter didn’t put any theme to the meeting other than the club would supply 2 blanks to all the turners who volunteered and for them to use by practicing with one blank at home the item they are to make at the club, the blanks were all Birch and would be interesting to see what they used them for at home, hopefully they will bring both to the meeting.

Our meeting this week on Thursday 17th August was a solo presentation by Alec Mutch, The subject matter was in 2 parts, the first being Long Hole Boring and the second was Threading in Wood. He explained that there would be no actual end product made at this presentation, the purpose was to show what was required and how to use the tools.

My (Alec Mutch’s) theme for this meeting is to demonstrate the use of pieces of equipment that are needed to deal with long hole boring and also to create threading using a thread box and tap in our woodturning.
I will show you all the equipment required for both of these subjects and some examples of threading that can assist in various applications, including making up some small jigs to help your work when threading.

Our meeting on Thursday 3rd August 2023 was organized by Nick Simpson, Nick’s theme for the meeting was to make something from a 4″ cube of Ash wood, he arranged for 4 more turners and himself to do the Cubic Challenge, there were no hard and fast rules on what to make, it was very much up to the individual turners as to what they were to produce.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 3rd August 2023, it’s being organized by Nick Simpson and Nick’s theme for the meeting is to make something from a 100mm cube of Ash wood.
He has recruited 4 more turners along with himself to man all 5 lathes, he also supplied a cube of Ash wood to each of the turners, however he has not said what they should make, all he has challenged them to do is to come up with a turning that includes the 100mm cube.

Our meeting on Thursday 20th July 2023 was organized by Geoff Potter, Geoff’s theme for the evening was to make something that included some natural elements in the turning, it could be anything, a vase, a bowl or anything else, the turners just had to leave some Natural Elements in the final turning.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 20th July 2023, it has been organized by Geoff Potter and Geoff’s theme for the meeting is working with Natural Edges. Natural Edges covers a whole host of different options, it could be leaving the bark on in certain places on a Bowl or on a spindle turned item such as a Candlestick or a Mushroom, it could be using a Burr and leaving some of the spikey profile uppermost, you could use a “Y” piece of wood to create an interesting shape or even turn a piece of wood in end grain, again creating a very different shape. Geoff will have all 5 lathes in use.

Our meeting on Thursday 6th July 2023 was organized by Alan Smith, Alan had arranged for 3 turners plus himself to do a demonstration on making Shallow Bowls or Plates.
However we had a couple of last minute cancellations from the turners scheduled to do the demonstrations, this left us very short of demonstrators with Alan and only one other turner Susan Drew, who arrived prepared to do their demonstrations.
