Our meeting on Thursday 22nd June 2023 was a solo demonstration by John Ruickbie, John’s subject for the demonstration was to show the members an example of Open Segmented Turning and to go on to demonstrate how it was made. Due to the complexity of this type of turning John had to do a lot of the preparatory work at home and explain the procedure and the equipment required to make this type of turning.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 22nd June 2024 it has an earlier start time of 6.30pm, this is to allow us to put forward some Health & Safety advice on the safe use of Fire Extinguishers, Joe Webster will do a short summary on using a Fire Extinguisher, which and when to use etc. this short presentation should last no more than 15 minutes but will give you some vital information on the use of a Fire Extinguisher.
Normal meeting will start at approximately 6.50pm.

Our meeting on Thursday 8th June 2023 was another of our Showtime meetings, this meeting was organized by Susan Drew with myself being compere for the evening. It was well supported as usual although the turnout of our members was a little light, possibly down to the very nice weather we are having at the time.

Our 2nd Shield Competition of the year was on Thursday 25th May 2023. The subject matter for this Competition was to make something using an offset or multi axis mounting point or points, all 3 categories Novice, Intermediate and Experienced had the same brief and the rest was left for you to decide.

Our meeting on Thursday 25th May 2023 is our 2nd competition of the year, the subject matter is to turn something with a Multi Axis centre point. This criteria is the same for all 3 categories but you will be judged only in the category you are listed as having. It can be anything made using more than one centre, the use of specialized equipment can be adopted or home made jigs made and used, you may use between centres or use a faceplate or a combination of both, but most of all we need more of you to enter than was present at the last competition.

Our meeting on the 11th May 2023 was organized by David Hobson he had arranged for Australian woodturner Jim Cameron to give the members a presentation on woodturning in Australia and also to do a slide show of some of his work along with some other work by Australian woodturners. Jim’s presentation was to last about an hour but such was the interest from our members that Jim’s presentation lasted for more than the time allocated which was fine with everyone. He gave a very comprehensive report on how woodturning got going in Western Australia and the amount of interest that it now receives, culminating in there now being 12 individual clubs with a membership in total of some 550 members, in the area of Western Australia.

Our meeting this week on Thursday 11th MAY 2023 has been organized by David Hobson, David’s original programme for this meeting was to have a visiting professional wood turner from Elgin by the name of Gary Lowe to do a presentation, however at very short notice Gary Had to cancel leaving David with the dilemma of having to find a replacement programme for this meeting and at very short notice.

Our meeting this week was all about Making Pens on the lathe, it was organized by Dave Line, Dave had all 5 lathes in operation with himself and 4 other turners making pens in various materials, most were being made from wood but there were a couple using Acrylics, all were using various pen kits that are readily available on the market.
