Our latest training day was on Thursday 19th May 2022, we had all 5 lathes in use along with 5 tutors. Most of the pupils were on their 2nd or 3rd training days, along with one trainee on their first session. Some finishing off their bowl work training and now starting on spindle training whilst the others were already doing some spindle training, and one pupil just starting with the bowl work.

Our meeting on Thursday 12th May 2022 was managed by David Ross, David had organised for 4 of the lathes to be working, 2 of which were given over to making vases, whilst the other 2 were taking part in our training programme as a one off for this meeting only. The 2 turners making the vases were David Hobson and Dave Line. David Ross was working on lathe nr1 with Alan Smith as part of the teaching programme, Errol Levings was on lathe nr3 with Jeff Buttress again as part of the teaching programme.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 12th May 2022, it is being managed by David Ross and David will have all 5 lathes working. He has asked 3 of the demonstrators to make wooden Vase’s or some sort of smaller items, he is also using 2 of the lathes for some teaching practices as a one off for this particular meeting.

Our latest training evening was held on the 5th May 2022, it was attended by 4 trainees and 4 tutors. The training programme is managed by Nick Simpson, he welcomed everyone to the training session and outlined the present position in regards to Covid, he went on to give his usual safety information advice before commencing with the programme.

Our meeting on Thursday 28th April 2022 was a Showtime meeting, it was managed by Peter Lawrence and compered by Alec Mutch. The participation from our members was excellent with 12 members showing a total of 46 items, the turn out for this meeting was very good and the response to the members showing their wares was also very good with a hearty round of applause for each of the participants as they completed their presentation.

At a recent club meeting I showed a wall hanging made from a ceramic tile and a wooden surround, I also explained how a tile should be fitted into the wooden surround, I also brought a cut through of the surround for all to see exactly how it needed to be made in order to not break the tile after it’s been fitted.

Our meeting this week on Thursday 28th April 2022 is once again a Showtime meeting. The meeting is organised by Peter Lawrence but I will be doing the job of compere. These meetings are to let others see exactly what you have done recently or indeed in the past, anything that you have made is acceptable and if there is a particular reason or story behind what you have brought in so much the better, but all we really want is for you to show your work. Do not be thinking just because you may have only started woodturning fairly recently that you could not show your work, we want to see everyone’s work, so bring them along, do remember you are not limited in the number of items you bring in to be shown.

We had a further training meeting on Thursday 21st April 2022, organised by our training manager Nick Simpson, there were 5 trainees along with 5 tutors, one of his tutors had to be replaced at very short notice due to a family crisis, I was asked by Nick to be the replacement tutor. The trainees were Barry Cumming, Darren Morrison, Richard Sawicki, Tony Wilson and James Montgomery, some were on their 2nd training session, whilst others were on their first training session.

Our meeting this week on Thursday 14th April was all about Natural Edged Turnings, this meeting was managed by Geoff Potter and was the first meeting to feature all 5 lathes in operation since the club re-opened in the Autumn of 2021. The turners for this meeting were, Geoff Potter, Bill Munro, Bob Chisholm, Alan Ross and Dave Line, all were making bowls, some from half a log others from a whole log and Geoff had the strangest looking piece of wood imaginable, but never the less do look at his outcome, it’s the old story of not judging a book by it’s cover, and in this case don’t judge the piece before seeing the outcome.

Our next club meeting is this Thursday 14th April 2022, it’s being managed by Geoff Potter and Geoff’s theme for the meeting is making articles with natural edge features included in the design. This may be something like a burr being used to make a bowl, or half a log even a whole log being turned into a decorative bowl, it could be making a mushroom from a branch.
