Start time 6.45pm.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 9th January 2025. It has been organized by myself (Alec Mutch) and the subject matter is working with Natural Edges or inclusions, that could mean a piece of faceplate work or something made between centres, as long as some of the natural elements are left on the item that’s being made will fulfil the criteria.
I will be manning one of the lathes and I have arranged for 4 more turners to man the rest of the lathes, each will be doing their own thing in regards to what they make.
I had a look through our archives to pick up some pictures of Natural edged items that were made previously, here are some of them.
Top Left, a piece of Birch with 3 integral bowls. Top Centre, a piece of Laburnum made from a “Y” piece. Top Right, a mushroom made from a piece of Rhododendron with some of the bark left on. Bottom Left, another piece of Rhododendron made from a “y” piece. Bottom Centre, an end grain bowl made from a branch of Laburnum. Bottom Right, a slender vase made from a branch of Laburnum, again some elements of bark left on.
Top Left, an end grain open form made from Rhododendron. Centre, a Burr Elm vase with inclusions left in as a feature. Top Right, a Natural Edged bowl made from a piece of Sycamore. Bottom Left, another Natural edged bowl made from Ash with the bark left on. Bottom Right, a multi stemmed bowl made from a piece of Maple.
Top Left, a bowl made from a piece of Burr Elm, turned end grain with the outer shape left as grown. Top Right, another piece of Burr Elm, this time turned with the upper edge left intact as grown. Bottom Left, an Australian timber, Red Gum made from a large Burr and face plate turned. Bottom Right, a piece of Ash where 4 stems intersected, giving it a most unusual shape.
Left, a piece of Laburnum, made from a “Y” piece. Centre, a Laburnum Christmas tree form with the base left as a feature. Right, a Spalted Beech bowl made from half a branch cut vertically through the pith.
I hope you liked my look through the archives, it’s very interesting to see what has happened in the past, I don’t know at this point what each of my fellow turners will be doing but I’m sure it will be interesting to see.
The usual tea/coffee will be available for a small donation of 50p and the usual meeting raffles will be on sale.
Do I need to remind you that the subscriptions for the club of 2025 are now due, you have until the 6th February to pay your subscription at which time if you have not signed up and paid the fee you will no longer be considered a member.
Last but not least I take this opportunity on behalf of your committee to wish you all a very happy New Year.
