Start Time 6.45 pm.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday 14th November 2024, it’s being organized by Susan Drew and Susan’s theme for the meeting is to make use of a Pyrography tool to embellish her woodturnings. Susan has an excellent touch when it comes to using a Pyrography machine, something she hopes to pass on to some of the club turners. We as turners don’t seem to have the magic touch that Susan has for this very delicate art, but it is something we all appreciate and would like to emulate.
This is quite a departure from woodturning but could be very useful when trying to design new ideas for our woodturnings, Susan has arranged for there to be 5 tables with herself and 4 others working the Pyrography machines, she will obviously take the lead in this and try to show the others just how it’s done.
Here are a few pictures of things of interest to Pyrography potential users.
The first essential is the Pyrography machine itself, this is the one I own, to say I use may be stretching the truth a little far, I have had a go but not with anything I would want others to see, perhaps after a crash course from Susan better results may follow.
Next on the necessities list would be a book on Pyrography, again this is something I own and have re-visited since Susan suggested an evening of Pyrography, not that it’s helped me a lot, the understanding is there it’s the touch I seem to lack. Another book I came across when searching my woodwork library was this one on Celtic designs, very useful for transferring to wood all sorts of Celtic designs that can then be followed by the use of the Pyrography machine and a steady hand.
Here are a few useful designs for Shading and Simple borders.
Left, some examples of very simple designs, and right, some examples of the type of thing inside the Celtic designs book.
Taking things to their ultimate example is something I’m sure Susan would be capable of doing but for the most of us heavy handed woodturners we could only admire. This is Pyrography at it’s very best.
How this is going to play out on Thursday I don’t know but I’m more than interested to find out, there will be 5 people working the machines, Susan Drew will obviously lead, the 4 others are Alec Mutch, Dave Line, Nick Simpson and Richard Sawicki.
I have prepared some hardwood samples to practice on for anyone who want’s to use them, they have been planed and sanded on both sides ready to use.
We want to see a good turnout for Susan’s meeting, we also want you to bring any of the donations you are giving for the Christmas Raffle, tea and coffee will be available for a small 50p fee and the usual weekly raffle and Christmas raffles will be on sale.
