Start time 6.45pm.
Our 2nd Shield Competition for 2024 will be held on Thursday 23rd May 2024, it’s being organized by Nick Simpson, assisted by David Hobson and Susan Drew. Nick’s subjects for this Competition is to make wooden cutlery. He has set a slightly different task for each category, the Novice category are to make a Scoop, the Intermediate category are to make a Matching Ladle or Spoon, the Open category are to make a Set of 4 matching Ladle’s or Spoons.
In addition to the Competition there will be 4 turners operating the lathes while the competition is going on, this has been organized by Susan Drew. The turners will have a free hand to make whatever they wish, but I’m sure there will be plenty of interest no matter what they will be turning. The members display table needs a little more attention as the numbers being shown has been dropping off, you know we all like to see what others are doing so please do bring along anything that you have made, it’s good for discussion, do remember this can also include things that are half done or if advice is needed in any way.
As this was the first time we have included wooden cutlery in our competitions, I had little to go on as far as pictures were concerned so I have borrowed some from the internet and Daniel Stewart our local professional woodturner and a member of our club.
Here are some pictures, first up are a selection of Scoops made by Daniel Stewart.
For the Novice category, these are some examples of Scoops for your guidance only.
Here is a typical design for a Ladle.
Here are a few designs for Spoons, there are many more designs to be found in the internet, do try to enter this Competition it’s not as hard as you may think, and we all enjoy seeing what others are making.
For all those who enter this Competition we wish you good luck with the judges and that you enjoy the experience of taking part.
