Start time 6.45pm.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 5th September 2024, it has been organized by Barry Cumming and Barry’s theme for this meeting is making Captive Rings. In addition to himself he will have at least 2 more turners working the lathes who will also be demonstrating the art of making captive rings.
This is a fairly specialised thing to make and not everyone will have the tools required to make them, although Barry seems to be able to turn rings without the need for any special tools or by using tools he has modified to make them work, it will be interesting to see exactly what he does on the night.
As you can imagine I had very few pictures in our archives of turning captive rings, so I borrowed some 0ff the internet, here are they.
Left is a goblet I turned with 2 captive rings, the wood is Sweet Chestnut and the rings were 6mm. On the right is one of the many different captive ring tools available to buy, this one comes with 4 different interchangeable tips that can be fitted to the main part of the tool giving the choice of captive ring sizes.
This is the standard captive ring tool on the market, made by Robert Sorby and costing around £30, it has only one size of ring that can be produced using this tool.
That’s all the pictures I could find that were available to be downloaded, you will need to come to the meeting to get further information, I’m sure it will be interesting to see and learn about.
In addition to the captive ring turning, one lathe has been reserved by Nick Simpson (training co-ordinator) for the training of Chris Lycett, who will be tutored by Geoff Potter.
The usual raffles will be on sale and tea/coffee will be available for a 50p donation, hope to see you all there.
