Our meeting this week on Thursday 11th MAY 2023 has been organized by David Hobson, David’s original programme for this meeting was to have a visiting professional wood turner from Elgin by the name of Gary Lowe to do a presentation, however at very short notice Gary Had to cancel leaving David with the dilemma of having to find a replacement programme for this meeting and at very short notice.

Our meeting this week was all about Making Pens on the lathe, it was organized by Dave Line, Dave had all 5 lathes in operation with himself and 4 other turners making pens in various materials, most were being made from wood but there were a couple using Acrylics, all were using various pen kits that are readily available on the market.

Our first shield Competition for 2023 was on the 13th April 2023, it was organized by Nick Simpson assisted by David Hobson. The theme for the Competition was all to do with making Wooden Eggs and Egg Cups, there were 3 categories taking part, for the Novice category they were required to make a Wooden Egg and Decorate it, for the Intermediate category they were required to make a Wooden Egg and Egg Cup also Decorated, for the Experienced category they were required to make 2 Identical Wooden Eggs with Egg Cups and Decorated.

Our meeting this week, Thursday 13th April 2023 is the first of our Shield Competitions for 2023, it’s being handled by Nick Simpson and David Hobson, see below for the rules of the competition and the criteria for each category, I.E. novice, intermediate and experienced.

There will be 2 types of competition each membership year – the traditional Christmas competition and 3 or 4 themed competitions leading to the award of the HWC Shields.
Competitors and classes: The competitions are open to all members of the HWC. Members are divided into 3 classes: Novice, Intermediate and Experienced. Allocation of entry class will be made by 3 or more members of the HWC teaching and training group (TTG) at the end of the membership year. New members who join during the membership year will be allocated a class level through discussion with 3 members of the Teaching and Training Group.

Our meeting this week on Thursday 30th March 2023 was organized by Errol Levings, his subject for this meeting was mainly End Grain Turning, he had arranged for all 5 of our lathes to be working, 3 turners were doing End Grain Turning, 1 turner was making a table leg using an offset method and 1 turner was making use of an Ash Canker to make a bowl.

Our meeting this week 30th March 2023, is all about end grain turning, it’s being handled by Errol Levings and he has arranged for 4 other turners and himself to man all the lathes.
End grain turning needs to be approached from a completely different way to that of face grain turning, no doubt Errol and those involved on the lathes will be demonstrating and discussing some of the changes in approach that’s required.

Our meeting this week, Thursday 16th March 2023 was a Showtime meeting. This meeting is where the members can show and tell about anything they had made recently or in the past, the Showtime meetings have been traditionally a very successful event and this one just past was no exception, the number of exhibiters and the amount of entries was very good.
