Just a short report on our latest training day on Thursday 25th August 2022, Nick Simpson our training manager had organised for only 2 trainees and 2 tutors being involved in this training day, all the rest of the tutors got an evening off. Those involved were Catrin Anderson (pupil) being mentored by John Ruickbie, and Ewan Gunn (pupil) being mentored by David Hobson. A report from John Ruickbie the next day told us the training session went very well, Catrin and John were making the base for a candlestick and Ewan and David were making a shallow bowl. This was Catrin’s last training session before John set her free to practice, it was Ewan’s 1st session with David and he would have 3 more sessions.

Our latest training meeting happened on Thursday evening 11th August 2022.
There were 4 pupils with 4 tutors for this training session, most of the pupils were on their 2nd or 3rd training courses, we give them all 4 courses, 2 doing bowl work and 2 doing spindle work, they are then given time to practice and only after that time are any ongoing problems dealt with, this would be done by contacting our training manager Nick Simpson and getting a further training session to deal with specific problems the pupil may encounter, Nick would then arrange for a tutor who is best suited to deal with the problem and set up a further training session.

Our latest training evening was on Thursday 28th July 2022, there were due to be 4 tutors along with 4 pupils, however one of the pupils failed to turn up leaving one of the tutors with nothing to do, there was some doubt about one of the pupils before the session started because he had indicated he might be late, we did give him the benefit of some time to turn up if he indeed was only going to be late, but he was a no show!

I took an impromptu video of this presentation by Alec and Errol about the options for woodturning finishes. They cover quite a lot of very useful information.
Unfortunately, the sound for the first 10 minutes or so has an annoying pinging noise (my phone) before I sorted it out for the rest of the video. All audio is captured by the phone, so please make some allowances to the quality as it varies quite a a lot with background noise, and various lathe and extractors running.
This is the associated post for the video
Part 2 is scheduled for the 29th September and a recording may or may not be added depending on the feedback this one gets…
