Our meeting on Thursday 14th November was arranged by Susan Drew, Susan had chosen Pyrography as her theme for the meeting. Over the past few years since Susan had joined our club she had shown various items in competitions and in general that she had decorated using a Pyrography machine, these were all very well received by the turners, so much so that she was requested to do a session demonstrating her art.
In addition to Susan doing a demonstration she arranged for 4 more tables with Pyrography machines so that all those who wanted to have a go at Pyrography could do so, she also supplied some pre-printed discs for our members to practice on. There wasn’t a minute go by that any of the Pyrography machines were not in use, everyone was keen to have a go, some with better results than others. Susan started off the session with a short talk on the use of Pyrography and invited everyone to have a go. There were some of the club members who did do some Pyrography on their woodturnings and they too were kept very busy answering questions and giving demonstrations.
I took a few photo’s during the evening, some of the completed works were very good indeed considering how little practice they all had.
Top Left, Susan the event organizer demonstrating on a small disc. Top Right and bottom Left was Fiona Campbell working on 2 very different items. Bottom Right, one of our new members Derek Adam here having a go on a small disc.
Top Left and Bottom Left, is Geoff Potter, working on one of Susan’s small pre-printed discs. Top Right, is David Ross one of our more experienced turners who also did quite a bit with Pyrography. Bottom Right is Richard Sawicki with an interesting piece of work that he was embellishing.
Here we have David Ross explaining how to do some shading.
Left is Kathleen Line, she did a Christmas themed Santa on one of Susan’s discs and very well done indeed. Right is Fiona Campbell working on Richard Sawicki’s big disc, it would read Highland Woodturners by the end of the evening.
Top, Judy MacDonald doing a Butterfly, another excellent effort taking into account how little time everyone had. Bottom, Matilda Rattray with a mountain scene, again an excellent effort.
That concludes or visit into Pyrography, I do hope to see some more items in future making use of this medium. Thanks to Susan for her organization of the Pyrograph event, it was good to see us doing some different things, more items like this would be very welcome in the future.
Our next meeting is on the 28th November 2024, it’s being organized by Alan Smith, Alan’s left the subject matter to the individual turner, so no theme just come and see what each of the turners come up with, there will be all 5 lathes being used.
We are still looking to receive donation prizes for the Christmas Grand Draw, do take them along at the next meeting and hand them in to Dave Line. Thank you in anticipation.
